Who Am I? by Lukas Kamrath
"The most important question a human being can ask themselves is, "Who am I?" - Prince Ea
Who are you? Are you a boy, a girl, a musician or an athlete? Are you a middle school student or are you in college? Do you have a job? Are you wealthy? These are all characteristics that you could use to describe yourself but what if they were taken away from you? Who are you then?
I recently had the opportunity to hear Prince Ea speak in New York City (and meet him in person!) and, at the time, he also stated “‘Who am I?’ is the question that answers all questions. But how can we know who we are? By knowing what you are not, you discover what your are.”
During this upcoming year I am going to be pulled out of school and sports, the two things I most closely identify with. Without these activities what type of person will I be? One of the main focuses of next year for everyone in my family is to discover new things about ourselves, not only on the surface but deep down.
We will likely find many new things about ourselves, such as passions that we had not yet known before – hiking, scuba diving, making friends with people from other countries. By removing myself from my usual activities and having more time and space to be alone, I hope to gain a better understanding of who I truly am.
